Disaster Relief

Ever since the global pandemic hit India, Sashakt worked to ensure that marginalised communities survive the harsh situation facing them with economic activities coming to a halt and complete lockdown enforced.

Ever since the global pandemic hit India, Sashakt worked to ensure that marginalised communities survive the harsh situation facing them with economic activities coming to a halt and complete lockdown enforced. This was a big step for an NGO that was traditionally not doing relief work. In March 2020 Sashakt embarked on a two-fold strategy.

  1. Provide nutrition support to communities through cooked food and dry ration.
  2. Provide protective gear and hygiene kits to medical staff, other workers and communities at large

Sashakt geared up relief activities across Delhi NCR ( Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, and Ghaziabad ) and many other states including UP, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gujarat.

Nutrition support

Cooked meals – with a small beginning with 300 meals a day in Noida late March the number of kitchens and meals kept on increasing to feed 7500 people a day across Noida, Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon, Varanasi, Sonbhadra and Bhubaneshwar. This was being done through nine kitchens run directly or through partner NGOs or Restaurants with had spare capacity. By the end of July 2020 Sashakt had distributed more than 210000 meals.

Dry rations - Dry ration have been distributed in Delhi NCR, Ranchi, Varanasi, Sonbhadra and Ahmedabad thanks to support received from ITC Foods, Azim Premji Philanthropic Initiatives, Feeding India, BMW India  and others. The normal kit included 5kg Atta, 5 kg Rice, 2 kg Dal, Cooking Oil, Spices. Sugar, Tea and Soap. By the end of May we had distributed more than 110 tonnes of rations to more than 8000 families.

Material support

Sanitation kit - Thousands of reusable cotton masks and soaps are also being distributed along with awareness messages across these locations. In some cases we are also managing to provide sanitary pads, soaps, phenyl bottles and sanitisers. This is based on availability of local supplies. So far we have distributed 15000 such kits across the country.

Provisioning of PPEs and other equipment for hospitals - Sashakt has partnered with local corporates to provide essential medical equipment to hospitals in the NCR. It worked closely with the DM’s office in Gurgaon and Noida and the Delhi Health Minister’s office so that the distribution happened exactly asper requirement. About 6,000 PPE kits were distributed in Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital, Dilshad Garden, Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital and IBHAS  in Shahdara, RML, Safdarjung, Ambedkar etc. and other Delhi Govt. hospitals. The Haryana Govt. received 4000 PPEs through the DM Gurgaon and 1000 PPEs were given to DM, GB Nagar.

Face shields and masks – Sashakt conducted a large program for donating face shields to Delhi Police and non-medical workers in Noida. So far we have distributed 15000 shields to the concerned. Masks have been distributed in Jharkhand, Bihar and Delhi NCR in large quantities. Till July 2020, more than 25,000 masks were distributed across the country. Some of these were produced by Transgender and SHG women from our Livelihood program.

Planning beyond material relief

Sashakt is aware that the Covid battle will be long drawn. The community as a whole has to prepare itself for a new world all together. Keeping the long term perspective in mind Sashakt is working on the following:

  • Building resilient communities – improved community preparedness for Covid, faster response and local support systems are being worked upon and will be implemented once the lockdown opens up.
  • SBCC - The community still needs a lots of accurate information. They also need to be more aware of what the govt.  is providing so that they can take advantage of it.
